How do you prepare your IC's who are on the team lead/management track?

Hi! Wondering what "challenges" and opportunities do you create for reps who are tracking for a team lead/ mangement promotion when still an IC?

      This is such a great question! One good way to do this would be to start having them lead team standups, 1-1’s and trainings. This is a good way to see where their strengths and weaknesses are and to really understand how you can support them!

      I encourage having 1-on-1’s with these IC’s as well as advising them to have 1-on-1’s with one another. It may helpful for them to put together career development plans that outline their focus areas, support areas, growth areas, etc.

        Those are great strategies! Gotta give them a chance to stretch their coaching muscles!

          Exactly! I think mentorship – which extends in various directions – is a great first step to get exposed to managerial opportunities.

      IC = independent contributor/contractor?

      1. Set a specific target for them that if they achieve x amount of sales in x amount of time, they will get promoted.

      2. Have a conversation that you need to see leadership traits — ie. they’re helping others, training others, contributing ideas etc.

      Hard to provide a more specific answer without more context.

      I think the biggest thing to remember is that so often sellers get promoted because they are high performers and are always hitting their numbers. Many times, those folks make horrible managers because they don’t know how to coach others and are so numbers driven. The ones who are often pretty close to hitting their numbers but are good at helping others and willing to take on extra tasks usually turn in to the best managers.
