Ferasophy: Salesforce should sunset the "Leads" and "Contacts" objects and consolidate into one object called "People".

Leads and Contacts are a nightmare to all RevOps professionals. Other CRM's and MAT's have already made this shift. Thoughts on SFDC following suit?

A great idea but I don’t see Salesforce making that kind of change any time soon. There are too many people that are too deeply invested in its current structure. I hope I’m wrong though!

Agreed 100%. Unlikely in the short-term, but a man can dream! 😀

Is that a big enough problem that it’d spell trouble for Salesforce?

Once any market leader is too big and clunky to innovate around strategic/technical debt, I’d imagine they’re vulnerable to disruption.

What you’re saying makes sense. For routing purposes, I think a lot of orgs use “leads” to identify inbound people that they have not talked to and “contacts” to determine who they have reached out to.

I do wonder if it will catch on and simplify things…

Interesting point! I was curious about the identification aspect as well.

@ferasabdel I once had a conversation with a well known go-to-market consultant about an idea he had to make an international standard sales taxonomy where objects are defined universally so, for example, “MQL” means the same thing to everybody in the world.

What would you think of that? Good for getting everybody in the same page, or would it get in the way of changes and innovations like your suggestion?

Im a huge fan of this idea! Even if it was just contacts instead of leads, it would be so much easier to organize and clean up. Having both allows for misinterpretation and mistakes to be made. Im curious why they have them broken into two areas currently and what their thought is around that.

Not all contacts are leads tho are they

Better would be a flag that allowed contacts to be tagged as live leads, lost leads, closed leads

Agree! Or maybe give us the option to “turn off” leads if we want to. We recently “converted” to all contacts/accounts in SFDC (integrated with HubSpot). It’s still a bit of a cluster, though. And new contacts are still set as leads momentarily & auto-converted to contacts with room for a handful of weird errors… It’s clunky.

This is such a good point. I never thought about it until I saw this, but it makes total sense.

Leads could represent people, people with budget, people with budget and a willingness to buy, people at a specific company with all of the above, or the company itself.

It’s sort of crazy that we still even use the word in polite conversation.
