How did your past job experience prepare you for being in sales?

I always think it is fun to see where people came from! Before being in sales I worked as an assistant to a dog trainer, several different roles in the service industry, and then I worked as a receptionist and office manager. My first sales job was being a personal trainer (which prepared me amazingly well for a life in tech sales!). What about you?

Great question! I’m excited to see what the other responses are. I think my first “sales” job was in Girl Scouts- selling cookies. I actually went to school to study journalism and public relations. I really loved learning more about people and why they do what they do. I then went in to IT recruitment- which is a form of sales. I learned how to talk with others and how to negotiate. It was my time volunteering as an underwriting chair for a non profit that really made me prepared! I had to do a lot of negotiating, understanding their needs, trying to make it a two way street- which really prepared me for life in sales.

Great question! I worked and helped on the family farm. Dad let me use a couple of acres and I grew corn and then sold it on the side of the road to earn money to go to University. Once I graduated, my first job was in sales, and I have never looked back since!

Great thought and always interesting to see how each new role molds our sales abilities. I started selling golf equipment in a big box specialty golf retailer. I learned quickly that my favorite aspect of sales was solving the customers’ problems and overcoming their issues. I learned quickly the power of suggestion and the importance of product knowledge. It’s helped me to strive to be not only a high energy sales pro, but also a product knowledge expert, supporting my customers and my teammates.

From retail I learned to have a sense of urgency that has carried to my B2B career. Eventually, that sense of urgency became my superpower.
